I have heartily recommended books before, yet I truly adjure every person to

consider reading this mini-tome!! It is quickly paced and absorbing,

yet finely-tuned & discerning. Whether you are God-fearing, or a

spiritual skeptic, you will not be able to come away from this book unaffected.

Under the premise that this historical character wanted to give a dispassionate

account of a man that millions now worship, the author reveals extraordinary

facts about the Jewish culture at the time, Rome’s military & political will,

the power structures within Judaism, and how they all interacted.

This book challenged my faith! I am a born-again believer in Christ,

and I believe that my God brought this book into my life to help me

better understand what I truly believe. To that end, I am happy to say

that the book left my beliefs validated - through faith - yet they were sorely

tested in the process. There was also precious little clue as to the author’s

personal bent on the matter until the very last paragraph of the very last page.

Even then, he left it up to the reader to decide.

This is why I think everyone should read it, no matter their current outlook. As an analytical fellow, I feel you will be challenged. You may feel tested as I did, affirmed, and even persuaded to change your outlook. In any case, I believe you will come away more informed than you might imagine

The author’s purpose is driven home clearly in “The Notebook”. The couple portrayed live the true meaning of love. Love endures forever! A lesson to be learned today is the need to work on relationships.

The topic of the book deals with two people coming from two different worlds. Can the gap be bridged? Is it possible for a relationship to withstand the pitfalls? The author covers the subject from the perspective of the male character in depth but not enough detail from the female point of view. The author is quite descriptive and the topic is addressed adequately.

The author supports his premise that miracles do happen. The notebook is the catalyst.

I could relate to Noah as he tries to awaken memories in Allie. I felt that need with a loved one and cherished those brief moments when she recognized me.

The author makes a persuasive argument that true love will persevere. I would recommend this book.

Written at a time when al Qaeda in Iraq was creating increasing havoc, the last two chapters have been overtaken by events, but his analysis of militant Muslim fundamentalists and Western secular societies is on target. Fundamentalists attack Muslims that they deem insufficiently pious, thus alienating the majority of Muslims in the middle and turning them to the West. Western societies mistakenly try to occupy Muslim lands, turning that majority against the West and towards the fundamentalists. But when the militants attack Western targets, most Muslims are behind them. Atwan credits poor economic and political conditions for this reaction, but Islam itself is also a factor. His analysis of the contradictory nature of Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of both bin Laden and radical Islamic fundamentalism, is must reading for all of us depending on oil from that region.

and got split up into eight paperback books so veterans of
Stephenson’s work may not be daunted by the nearly thousand pages of
his new book “Anathem“. However, people interested in a common
science-fiction plot turned slightly on its ear may find the book a
worthwhile investment in time. The story unfolds on a world called
Arbre which is very similar to our own in many ways up to a point. But
Arbre has a history of long periods of time where scholars are
cloistered away from the rest of the population with only limited and
regulated contact with the “saecular” world. Special events transpire
to suspend this usual relationship and build to a climax that is
challenging to understand, but thought-provoking and rewarding. The
explorations of the nature of consciousness alone may make the book of
interest to readers with a philosophical bent.

If there is such a thing as literary sleight of hand, this writer, comedian & magician has it down! Analytically, there are so many tongue-in-cheek references, hammy malapropisms & schlock terms interwoven with wry humor & a smidgeon of facts in this paperback as to make one think it a complete waste of time and a tree. Yet the man’s unique spin & talent for knowing just when to use each is what separates this work from other fictitious trash.

It’s very tempting to list examples, however there are so many good ones that it would be like “showing you the whole movie in the trailer”. I will say that if a person is not well-versed in actual American history, they could be thoroughly confused, though possibly not as badly as many people who fell asleep in class seem to be anyway.

One definitely would not want to read this to get any real sense of historic events; yet the reasonably astute student should get a ton of belly laughs out of the twisted points of view & hilarious ironic observations.

Good biographies are more than just an accounting of a famous person’s life. They are a portrait of someone the reader presumably does not know, and therefore only as revealing as the painter’s talent allows.

In this case, we have a subject – William O. Darby – whose fame may have passed with time, yet his contribution to our society, the World’s security & the lives of myriad individuals was immeasureable. We learn this through the prodigeous efforts of an equally accomplished writer & historian.

Mr. Jeffers has over seventy different volumes in print, and brings his considerable menu of acquired knowledge to each new work. He goes to extraordinary lengths to fill-in all the background details that round out a living, breathing account of Colonel Darby’s character, perspective, ambitions & subsequent actions. In the process he also highlights, and brings to the fore, many of the people he interacted with throughout his daily life. The affect is almost that of seeing a home movie, in its sense of realism.

Though very sad that Darby is killed only days before the conclusion of the war, I was also keenly aware that his short life was one of great accomplishment. This is not only true in the sense of how the world saw him, but in the completion & fruition of his own goals. Having known several people who are current Army Rangers/Navy Seals, or members of one’s immediate family, it is gratifying to know more about some of the founding history of these fighting forces.
